| Good Points |
- desolate atmosphere mirrored in art - focus on details set scale and perspective - rogue! |
| Bad Points | - if you don't like the overwhelming feeling of damnation, this book is not for you |
| Good Points |
... you can show the reader a lot of things - action all over the place |
| Bad Points |
... you really can't do it properly - too much going on at the same time - too little focus on every single aspect of the story - which in the end means: Something important is happening everywhere and it all means nothing. Fail. |
| Good Points |
- art and atmosphere - cinematic feeling - ... and of course Jessica in costume - ... but she's also very fear-inspiring without! |
| Bad Points | - wrong release format. This is meant to be a graphic novel, not a monthly comic! |
| Good Points | - Magneto trying redemption - or pretending |
| Bad Points |
- all just a huge set-up building momentum for next month - Greg Land is starting to get on my nerves |
| Good Points | - Agents of Atlas |
| Bad Points |
- the book has no point - and no characters to care about - that the Agents of Atlas are the good point in a Thunderbolts book should make you think |
| Good Points |
- Hank Pym outsmarting Norman Osborn - new dangers already unfolding - great action - background research does not impede action |
| Bad Points |
- I don't like any of the characters! - Despite so much happening, it still only feels like we're STILL building tension |
| Good Points |
- good art, inspiring doom - if you like The Sentry: The Sentry |
| Bad Points |
- too de-compressed - focusing on one character only and ... - ... everything revolves only around his split-persona - without a real solution |
| Good Points |
- I believe behind all this text, an intelligent story is hiding - action and depth - great art ... |
| Bad Points |
- ... too often hidden behind too much text - story not easy to access because of too much information - and because of that the book stays WAY behind its potential |
| Good Points |
- simple and elegant art fitting the story perfectly - a unique mixture of comedy and action - never ridiculous - setup for the next story also already starts |
| Bad Points | - why is there not more of this?! |
| Good Points | - lots of action ... |
| Bad Points |
- ... which means nothing - "clumsy" art - still too drawn out. Get to the fuckin' point! |
| Good Points |
- a new direction - dark atmosphere - kick-ass katana - no batman (!!!) |
| Bad Points | - various artists lead to a non-unified feel of art |
| Good Points |
- Mystique - Cover art |
| Bad Points |
- story fails in reasoning - writing unable to handle Nathan, Sentry - art lacks dynamics, scale and dimension |
| Good Points |
- Zeb Wells Pulp Superhero Magic Mastermind! - mixing comedy elements into drama and tension! - pulling off a stunt like that behind our backs - could rival B.P.R.D, EASILY better than Dr. Voodoo |
| Bad Points |
- cover sucks - I am AFRAID there's too much courage! - No action here, just setting things up (but doing so well) |
| Good Points |
- Black Alice - dark humor - an exciting roster switch - GREAT cover |
| Bad Points | - artificial action sequence |
| Good Points |
- NOT more of the same - motivations and art (facial expressions) match well |
| Bad Points |
- too damn straightforward - too little symbolism - this could have been awesome ... and it is not :( |
| Good Points | - more de-mystification of superheroes |
| Bad Points |
- basically more of what we had before - not really taking advantage of the medium comic - watching from the outside. Distance. |
| Good Points |
- cinematic art - art and mood fit well - wonderful details and focus |
| Bad Points |
- too de-compressed story - rubbbing it in - suspension of disbelief destroyed twice |
| Good Points |
- Gravel in a very new position - magic mostly understandable - a new threat which seems very prepared for Gravel - new minor seven directly involved |
| Bad Points | - story "only" exposition |
| Good Points |
- deep - the whole concept makes perfect sense - art is good, managed to display the ground-shaking events - and still there's a hint of pulp-feeling left |
| Bad Points |
You're kidding. Right? Okay maybe one thing: It's all one big history lesson. |
| Good Points |
- sense of scale - storytelling technique well applied - focus on elements despite huge-ass battles |
| Bad Points |
- story in general is too big - too little progress in overall story - Blackest Night is too big for its content |
Two things: The art is sometimes good, often bad. Don't understand why there are some really good-looking panels. The artist probably can "do it", but most of the time doesn't.
The story itself? Doesn't make much sense to me. Psylocke follows her old body to japan, where it gets attacked and a challenge is offered, which she accepts. Why? How? I guess you can't know from reading this book. Which is big fail.
| Good Points |
- Psylocke - colors - art sometimes |
| Bad Points |
-art most of the time - 1000-ninjas-law - book almost inacessible without prior knowledge |
It has all already been said. THe story is unremarkable, the art is unremarkable, the book is unremarkable. I don't think this book will stick. We can be happy, if this gets 12 issues done. And it isn't for Giffen not trying. He tries all right. Tries to make us readers care about the characters, tries to tell us how they are, why they are how they are. But it doesn't work.
And Blackest Night? Evil dead ones, loved ones (or hated ones) return, in overpowering might. Where have I seen that before ...
Like this, it is unnecessary.
Try Metal Men, though.
| Good Points |
- story is so-so - art is also so-so - metal men second feature - Doom Patrol boss hopefully gets done with |
| Bad Points |
- work is put into characters. I still can't care. - pretty much everything is unremarkable ... which is the worst thing that can happen to a story. Being unremarkable. - Blackest Night being ... the same as in every other Blackest Night tie-in |
Yes, my rating is mostly based on the emotional aspect. I don't care much, that a lot of the story is a bit fabricated, because it all connects well with me. I like how this book exists off the beaten track and manages to evolve so wonderfully around its core concept. I can understand the characters presented very well and I especially like the connection to our world by using relatively current events. A little pearl, maybe a bit rough, but with a lot of potential.
| Good Points |
- simple yet effective art - slightly sad and eerie - strong emotional connection - wonderful concept |
| Bad Points |
- maybe a bit too fabricated - maybe a bit too simple |
Yeah. I reall hate it, when a book is all about nothing in the end. I hate it, when the parts of a book don't mix. Don't get me wrong. Ian Churchill does a decent job on the art, but he'd be awesome on a book like Lobo!
And the "big reveal" in the end? Reduces our newfound hype-character wannabe Purgatori to a mere means to an end. Awesome. Not.
All you need to know about this book you can see on the cover and it's better, when your eyes never venture past that.
| Good Points | - art is okay |
| Bad Points |
- art and story theme don't match - so many pages. So little content. - red she-hulk hype has been up to nothng in the end |
I very much admire Maleev's style in combination with the theme and mood of this book. This works very well here: Focus on the important elements only, the reader is very close to the main character and dragged right into the story through art and storytelling. Bendis' style is quite right for this book, but so far there is not much movement in the story. It is a bit early to judge the book because of that yet, though.
The problems I see at the moment are mostly like a systematical thing: The story and art is rather dark and gritty and there can be a thing as "too much of the same". The whole style is very befitting for a miniseries, but for an ongoing book? Also the secluded feeling and lack of a greater image (so far) might pose a problem in the long run.
My suggestion: Read it! It's only #2 and only time can tell, if things work out. just be prepared for a rather dark, focused and secluded book.
| Good Points |
- focus on the important elements - dark and dirty story goes well with the art - reader is drawn into the story, very close to it and the character |
| Bad Points |
- feels a bit disconnected from the rest of marvel - maybe a bit too dark - lack of a "greater image and plan" so far |
Honestly, what I said about is what I mean. I've been overly hyped (like almost every fan of the series) and was not disappointed. This is a worthy finale to a series that at the same time is a meta-comic and a story all of it's own.
Planetary has its own feel and manages to keep that feeling up the very last issue.
| Good Points |
- everything. Even the technobabble - composition, move-like panels and story flow - faces - fiction-science, science-fiction |
| Bad Points |
NONE! Mark my word! NONE! |
| Good Points |
- The story moves forward - tension build-up, deem seems inevitable |
| Bad Points |
- story suffers from very obvious plot protection (which really destroys it for me) - Sinestro-Corps = Whacko-Corpse? |
Warning: This review is somewhat ranty and somewhat spoilery!
I'm not really as impressed with Blackest Night: Titans #2. I like the Teen TItans because I totally like Donna Troy and I totally like Starfire. That's not to say I don't like the rest of the characters, but these two really impress me.
So, if it weren't for them ....
I don't know about Kori's and Terra's history, but the display of emotion, as she all out attacks resurrected Terra is just wonderful. That left an impression. Also the Titans striking back at the Black lanterns offered a glimmer of hope, that there is a chance to contain the situation, but alas, it shall not be.
And as it shall not be, we get more of what we already had in most of Blackest Night: Heroes get beaten by dead heroes or loved ones and even wins are only temporary. It all comes with a great cost.
Sorry guys. I am no longer shocked by this. It worked the first issue. It worked in the first "spion off" book (XYZ Blackest Night). It might even have worked in the second or third book. But with all the Blackest Night stuff around, I still only see "more of the same". That's neither original, nor shocking. It's simply repetitive and boring.
Oh and Hawk and Dove? I like those two. I also think the basic premise of pitting them against each other is wicked. It would even be awesome if:
a) We would be given more time to explore the relationship between the two sisters more to create an emotional bond.
b) The event of being attacked by a loved was not so ... well... it's a normal thing these blackest nights.
Ed Benes art however is awesome. I love his cheesecaky style. I love the coloring, so vibrant and full of contrast. But more than that? Nah. Sorry.
Oh wait. Maybe there is one more good point: I believe it is well displayed, how the Titans are actually friends to each other as they try to help one another in the fights. But even that is no longer enough to make this story a good one.
A comic story does not have to be original. But if you have read the same (and almost EXACTLY the same!) story again and again over the last few weeks ... it really, really doesn't work anymore.
| Good Points |
- Ed Benes Art - Friendship among the titans well displayed |
| Bad Points |
- we've been through this before. - OFTEN! (yeah. Emphasis! It's not original anymore.) - And too little progress - even the retarding element as Starfire stops Terra is lost |
A good comic in a good storyline that could have been so much better, if it had the time to properly unfold and escalate. The pencils are awesome, sadly the colors take away some of the awesomeness. Still a good book, worth reading.
| Good Points |
Good story, well told awesome composition of images very cinematic feel |
| Bad Points |
story lacks time to really unfold and "deliver" colors detract from the whole experience |
