Thor 606 is a story about a man and his shiny new suit. Oh and there's also some stuff about that man dissecting gods. So, without further interruption, this is our review!
Thor is a book that I was hesitant to stay on; I jumped on at 601 and spent a good chunk of time wondering why they hell JMS was taking so damn long with. Then he left and Kieron Gillen was going to take over, and I wasn't sure I wanted to stay on. Well I decided to, and boy was I glad I did because I've actually enjoyed where this first arc. But with Siege on the way and Asgard playing a huge role in that story, I find myself slipping back into skepticism over this current issue. After reading it, I'm a little torn about my feelings on this ending.
I'll get the hard part out of the way; I'm not crazy about this issue's story overall. I feel like things are trying to wrap up as fast as they can so that we can make way and get ready for the Siege related issues because Thor pretty much has to have Siege tie-ins, or else it wouldn't be much of a blockbuster event book. Sometimes it sucks to face the reality that is mainstream comics. On the bright side, I didn't see this arc going for any more than one more issue, so it got that part right!
Okay, so I did enjoy the issue, even if I wasn't "crazy for it". Thor and Doom throw down and Doom is packing some major heat. That heat is actually a shiny new armor based on one Thor's father created, then modified himself with a little help from Loki and the lives of a few Asgardians. Unfortunately for Doom, Thor really has a soft spot in his heart for the Asgardians, what with him being one and all, so he doesn't take kindly to Doom's shiny new suit at all. The thing you really should try to avoid is pissing off the god with a hammer that makes thunder, because both tend to hurt like a bitch. Doom puts up a valiant fight, but ultimately Thor destroys Doom's shiny new suit and forces Doom to retreat. There's also some stuff with Balder, but with Doom and Thor throwing down I could care less about that.
In the art department, I was actually surprised that I enjoyed this art as much as I did. Billy Tan did a good job making this issue look nice. I didn't like his New Avengers stuff, so it was a nice surprise to really like art I thought I was going to hate. Also, that cover isn't too shabby. Wish they'd show off Doom's armor a bit more, but this will do instead.
Overall, I liked it, but only enough. The art is good, and it's nice to see Thor and Doom fight, but I didn't really love this issue.
